2024 Legislative Report from ARNPs United of Washington State

Posted 4 months ago by Nancy Lawton

The 2024 Washington State Legislative Session has ended. This is a summary of ARNPs United 2024 legislative efforts. For a complete report, go to the ARNPs United 2024 Legislative Final Bill Report.
SB5373 to Restore Full Insurance Reimbursement to ARNPs (support) was pulled out of committee by the  Senate Ways and Means Committee and is dead for the 2024 legislative session. Despite gaining unprecedented support this session, the bill did not receive a vote and was once again stalled in the Senate Ways and Means committee. It was encouraging to witness key Republicans expressing support and committing to vote yes if the bill had been heard. This shift was largely due to the robust coalition of providers/lobbyists we have assembled over recent years.

As we move into 2025, we will persist in educating policy makers about this issue and arranging meetings with them. We will also be seeking a new sponsor in the Senate since Sen. Randall is planning a run for Congress. In addition, the retirements mentioned earlier and other member movements mean the legislature - particularly the Senate Ways and Means committee - will look quite different next year. These changes bode well for the ongoing progress of the bill.

HB 2416 (Graham, R-6) (support) changing our title from ARNPs to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) has passed. The bill becomes effective June 30, 2027.

HB 2115 (Thai, D-41) (support)- Allows prescribers to request that the label for a prescription for abortion medication include the prescribing and dispensing health care facility name, instead of the practitioner's name.

HB 1954 (Riccelli, D-3) (support) - Establishes that participation in reproductive health care services or gender-affirming treatment by health care providers, consistent with the standard of care in Washington, may not serve as the basis for professional discipline under the Uniform Disciplinary Act.

SB 5184 (Rivers, R-18) (oppose)– A bill creating the role of Anesthesiologist assistants  as a new health profession licensed by the Washington Medical Commission is passed.

Thank you for your support!
